She stood among barefoot children waiting with their empty plates to be fed by aid groups. Her eyes had a look that was intense and haunted. I pulled her from the crowd for the photo, her clothes were of a different class, and even her sandals stood out among the children. As she told her story I fought back tears, she loved her brother and father so deeply the scars of what she witnessed was raw but she maintained the stoicism of the refugees. I could see the fear, anger, and tenderness in her eyes that reminded me of my own children. There was something about her that broke my heart, that made me fear for her childhood and the wickedness of man. Showkat Arar,10, from village of Maungdaw* has been at the refugee camp for  ten-days. She witnessed the military kill her father and brother, and broke her arm while crawling away to safety. She spent five days fleeing the attacks on her journey to Bangladesh with her mother and little brother before eventually crossing the border and finally seeing a doctor for medical attention. Cases of rape continue to go unreported because of the stigma, but every villager we spoke to told stories of young woman being systematically rapped by the military.

Marjm had been sick for five-days has suffered from coughing, stomach cramps and fever. Her and her father walked from their village through the forest to escape the military. Marjm also was witness to a girl being rapped in front of her before they fled. The stigma of rape is real for the Rohingya and few admit it. However, everyone speaks of it’s widespread use of it by the military. Marjm was silent in her fathers arms and I fear for what she had experienced.

This new “demo-land” has changed the once calm state into a volatile mix of protestors; ranging from the far right to sex positive. These are faces of those protestors, people who are taking democracy to the streets while their dissenting voices go all but unnoticed in the national din of chaos and social upheaval. Few of the demonstrators want their names to be revealed. Out of respect to their wishes I have left all names removed. I attended rally’s that saw people of color supporting Trump and white people advocating for people of color, Rhodesian revisionist instigating conflict, police dressed for war, protests against Google gentrification and women on Slut Walks.  It’s been a strange place in this microcosm of Los Angeles which reflects the whole of America’s disquiet.

So I headed off to the LA County Fair as a way to find what America has become. It’s no longer 4H, animal husbandry contests and pony races, rather it’s become a supersized sample of the nations gluttony on display in the most crass and exposed light. Everything is ginormous, from the super sized food deep fried and dusted with sprinkles, to human sized stuffed animals, everything was bigger. My biggest shock came in the size of people, so big walking was no longer an option, with motorized personal mobility devices swarming the fair grounds like a locust of exhaustion and obesity. It was with this stunned shock and disbelief I traversed the fair grounds, awed and amazed at what America now symbolized. So I hunted the moments of gluttony, consumption and sheer pride that comes from being the worlds fattest nation.
